Provençal garden around a swimming pool

Quelques mois après la construction de leur maison sur les hauteurs d’un petit village provençal, les propriétaires ont fait appel à Créateurs d’intérieur pour concevoir et aménager leur jardin. Largement remanié par le chantier de la maison, il fallait tout reprendre pour créer un écosystème vivant et cohérent.
Une page blanche
La réflexion sur cet aménagement paysager a commencé dès la réception de la nouvelle maison. Sur la parcelle, il n’y avait pas de jardin proprement dit. En effet, le terrain avait été complètement remanié par le chantier de la maison. Le sol était très pauvre, avec peu d’humus et beaucoup de cailloux.
Le paysagiste a tout repris, en redessinant les niveaux, en introduisant de la terre végétale et en pensant l’organisation du jardin dans ses moindres détails.
Créer un écosystème vivant et cohérent
Un des objectifs du projet était de faire oublier le caractère artificiel du terrain et de créer un écosystème vivant et cohérent, avec une logique de terrassement naturel et de gestion durable de l’eau.
Le projet consistait donc à restructurer les niveaux du terrain et à y introduire un sol fertile propice à la croissance de la végétation. Un bassin filtrant et une cuve de récupération des eaux de pluie viennent compléter l’installation.
Afin de proposer un espace de plain-pied autour de la maison, le paysagiste a déplacé un imposant talus de terre vers le fond de la parcelle. Cela a permis d'aplanir le dénivelé. Ce principe de réemploi permet d’agrandir le jardin tout en limitant l'usage de machines de terrassement coûteuses et polluantes lors du chantier.
Le long du terrain, on trouve un mur de soutènement en pierre qui intègre différentes assises pour créer des espaces isolés : des lieux ombragés propices à la lecture, et d'autres plus ensoleillés.
Le principe de ce jardin naturaliste est de mettre en œuvre des ambiances naturelles et sauvages tout en minimisant autant que possible l'intervention humaine.
Une végétation provençale
Le paysagiste s’est appuyé sur des plantes locales, notamment des plantes de garrigue et des vivaces adaptées aux sols secs. L’idée était d’éviter l’installation d’un arrosage automatisé et de proposer un jardin autonome, qui nécessite le moins possible d’entretiens superflus. S'inscrivant dans une démarche écologique, des plantes adaptées au climat provençal ont été sélectionnées. Ces essences ne nécessitent pas d'arrosage permanent et supportent bien les périodes de sécheresse.
Parmi les essences, on trouve : acanthes, achillées, heuchères, fougères, fatsia, yucca rostrata, bulbine, agapanthe, magnolia, laurier-tin, jasmin étoilé, bignone, rosiers de Banks, chèvrefeuille, lavandes, romarin, sauge, lavatère, phlomis…
Le dasylirion de l'ancienne maison a été réintroduit dans un massif structurant le pourtour de la piscine, avec d'autres plantes exotiques. On observe un jeu de contraste avec le paysage de garrigue environnant.
Une piscine et un couloir de nage
La présence de deux piscines s’explique par une modification de la législation locale en matière d’urbanisme. Construit selon les normes de l'époque, le premier bassin est désormais destiné aux enfants. L'évolution des normes d'urbanisme a permis la création d'un couloir de nage.
Pour établir une liaison entre les deux bassins, le paysagiste a créé un pont en bois exotique (ipé). Parmi les autres matériaux utilisés, on trouve une pergola en acier thermolaqué, une ombrière en cannes de bambou, des chaises de jardin Luxembourg de Fermob. La table basse et les abats-jours ont été chinés.
A few months after the construction of their house on the heights of a small Provençal village, the owners called upon Créateurs d'intérieur to design and landscape their garden. Largely disrupted by the house construction works, everything had to be rebuilt from scratch to create a living, coherent ecosystem.
A Blank Canvas
The thinking around this landscaping project began as soon as the new house was handed over. There was no proper garden on the plot — the land had been completely disrupted by the building works. The soil was very poor, with little humus and a great deal of stones.
The landscape designer started from scratch, redesigning the levels, introducing topsoil, and planning the garden's layout down to the finest details.
Creating a Living and Coherent Ecosystem
One of the project's objectives was to make the artificial nature of the plot disappear and create a living, coherent ecosystem with a natural terracing logic and sustainable water management.
The project therefore involved restructuring the terrain levels and introducing fertile soil conducive to plant growth. A filtration pond and a rainwater harvesting tank complete the installation.
To create a level area around the house, the landscape designer relocated a large earth embankment to the back of the plot, leveling out the slope. This reuse principle enlarges the garden while limiting the use of costly and polluting earthmoving machinery during the build.
Along the plot, a stone retaining wall incorporates various seating areas to create secluded spaces: shaded spots conducive to reading, and others more sun-drenched.
The principle of this naturalistic garden is to create natural, wild atmospheres while minimizing human intervention as much as possible.
Provençal Vegetation
The landscape designer drew on local plants, particularly garrigue plants and perennials adapted to dry soils. The idea was to avoid installing an automated irrigation system and to offer a self-sufficient garden requiring as little maintenance as possible. Following an ecological approach, plants adapted to the Provençal climate were selected — species that do not require constant watering and withstand periods of drought.
Among the species: acanthus, yarrow, heuchera, ferns, fatsia, yucca rostrata, bulbine, agapanthus, magnolia, bay laurel, star jasmine, trumpet vine, Banks roses, honeysuckle, lavender, rosemary, sage, lavatera, phlomis…
The dasylirion from the original garden was reintroduced in a bed structuring the pool surround, alongside other exotic plants — creating a contrast with the surrounding garrigue landscape.
A Pool and a Swimming Lane
The presence of two pools stems from a change in local planning regulations. Built to the standards of the time, the first pool is now reserved for children. The evolution of planning rules allowed the creation of a swimming lane.
To create a link between the two pools, the landscape designer built a bridge in exotic hardwood (ipé). Other materials used include a powder-coated steel pergola, a bamboo cane shade structure, and Fermob Luxembourg garden chairs. The coffee table and lamp shades were sourced at flea markets.
